With few bum notes, the Italian plumber’s cracked it again with a great return to form for Nintendo’s long-running series.
Best played with friends – although there is a neat single-player mode – you compete against each other on a traditional board game set-up, collecting stars when you win one of 80 new mini-games.
Interesting new challenges – which include bowling, making pizza and beanstalk growing – are faster and more fun than before, and all offer clear instructions, good graphics and some frantic game play.
Even if some Mario fans do find them disappointingly easy, win enough of these and you can unlock two new characters – Shy-Guy and Kameko – or admire your achievements in Museum Mode. There are plenty of bad guys on hand to frustrate your best efforts to beat your fellow gamers at the party too.
Watch out for the tricky traps, the Bob-mob time-bombs and the Bowers squares, which come thick and fast at the end, where you run the risk of losing everything.
